Abstract

The article analyzes the recent historiographical sources, the authors of which, mainly representing scientific schools from the Russian regions, turned to the study of one of the controversial issues of early Soviet history - the creation by the Bolsheviks of a new type of multinational Soviet state. After Russian Revolution of October 1917, this was one of the priority tasks that predetermined the legitimation of the socialist system established by the Soviet government in the post-imperial space. The Bolshevik government having begun to “solve the national question” found itself in a difficult condition of strategic choice because in late imperial Russia differences between nationalities were created and supported in every possible way deliberately preventing the formation of national self-identification. Despite the revolutionary doctrinaire, it was impossible in a short time to eliminate the reasons that in the recent Russian imperial past prevented the multinational population of the country from truly realizing their national identity. The actualization and sometimes non-standard interpretation by Russian scholars of questions about the causes, circumstances, and consequences of the national-state consolidation of the country, revolutionary carried out by the Bolsheviks after coming to power in October 1917, predetermine the scientific and practical importance of the historiographical understanding of the scientific research conducted on this issue.
