Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the role of expressive syntactic means in modern English young adult fiction. The research material was the book “This Winter” (2015) written by a young English writer Alice Oseman. Various expressive syntactic devices are analyzed in the article. Special attention is paid to the role of parentheses, elliptical constructions, syntactic repetitions, parcelling constructions and other syntactic means. The expressive potential of punctuation marks used in the book is also indicated. The results of the study are the following: expressive syntactic devices are widely used in young adult fiction and play a very important role in it. Parentheses are the most common expressive means in the analyzed material. There are examples of various parentheses from the point of view of their position in the sentence, structure, size, content, punctuation marks. They are used to clarify information, draw attention to some ideas and express someone’s attitude to them. Elliptical constructions are very important in making emotional speech. They help to draw the reader’s attention to important information. Syntactic repetitions and parcelling constructions are used to emphasize important points. The examples of these devices are given in the article. Different punctuation marks (dashes, ellipses, colons, semicolons, quotes, exclamation mark and others) also can be used to enhance expressiveness. All expressive syntactic means used by the author contribute to the creation of an interesting and emotional book for adolescents.
