Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the reception features of the traditional plot of world literature about Dracula. (The scientific novelty and relevance of the work are due to the fact that it examines D. Simmons’ novel “Children of the Night,” which has not yet received the attention of domestic scientists, in the context of mythocritic literary studies. It is proved that: 1) artistically interpreting the mythical and magical picture of the Wallachian/Romanian world and the poetic worldview of the Romanian people in the paradigm of magical realism, Simmons places historical reality in a fantastic continuum, depicts the supernatural as part of everyday life, creates a model of the national microcosm and proceeds from folklore, ritual and mythological representations of Romanians; 2) Simmons recoded and re-semantized the traditional plot of world literature, abandoning the negative concept of the main character image, not a vampire, but the father of the future savior of mankind. This has led to a major transformation of Draculian discourse ingrained in popular culture; 3) Simmons synthesizes the Draculian plot with the plot about strigoi and with the mythologeme of the divine child (with its structure-forming motifs) and creates a provocative apocrypha within the Draculian myth in the spirit of the Bogomil heresy; 4) the substantial and structural elements of myths and rituals revealed in the process of exploring Simmons’ text made it possible to decipher the deep meanings of the novel, which have paratextual links with the philosophy of M. Eliade.
