Abstract

The article examines strategies for implementing genre play in the intertext of L. Binet’s novel “The seventh function of language” (2015). A review of the main concepts of intertextuality developed by Y. Kristeva, R. Barthes, J. Genette, Yu. M. Lotman, N. A. Fateeva is carried out, the phenomenon of genre transformation as an important attribute of the poetics of modern fiction is described. As a part of the study, the author identified specific characteristic of detective, spy thriller, historical, university, semiotic novel and other genres, established intertextual connections and motives connecting the novel by L. Binet with the works by A. K. Doyle, I. Fleming, U. Eco, D. Lodge, D. Tartt and other writers. It is shown that the genre play in the novel is determined by the chronotope of the work, based on a combination of documentary facts and fiction; intertextual inclusions, going back to the philosophical works of French structuralists and post-structuralists of 1970-80’s; features of the composition. The writer’s artistic strategies, allowing to combine plenty genres in one work, are quotations, allusions and plagiarism, actualization of recognizable plot structures, and polydiscursivity. At the same time, genre play and intertextuality of “The seventh function of language” are mutually dependent. Thus, L. Binet provides the novel with stylistic, narrative, and plot originality and demonstrates continuity in relation to key works of both mass fiction and philosophical discourse of the 20th century.
