The article is devoted to the artistic design of the play – a fairy tale by A. N. Ostrovsky, completed by the author in 1873. The author of the article turns to the primary source of natural places where the fairy tale plot originated and was first embodied in the scenography of artists of the late 19th – first half of the 20th centuries, considered the most significant production decisions, some of which are in the funds of the Shchelykovo Museum-Reserve. The purpose of this work is an attempt to determine the general picture of the development of the stage interpretation by the artists of the fairy tale “the snow maiden” by A. N. Ostrovsky, as part of the collection of the museum-reserve “Shchelykovo”. The research methodology is based on the historical and chronological development of the visual images of the fairy tale, starting from the literary source to the artistic embodiment in sketches. The very analysis of scenery and costumes is based on the specific principles of theatrical art: drama, suite, opera. The decorative material is considered in connection with the literary and aesthetic principles of the writer, genre form, reflecting the spring-winter mood, fantastic human images and landscape sketches. Graphic material, including the works of V. M. Vasnetsova, M. A. Vrubel, K. A. Korovina, A. A. Arapova, A. F. Buslaev is analyzed as a kind of integral system, at the same time bringing its own aesthetics, individual style and inner content to the stage interpretation of the fairy tale.
