Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of linguistic means of the concept of “suicide” representation in the English literary text. The research material was the detective novel by Stephen King “End of watch”. The concept is considered to be one of the central notions of cognitive linguistics and remains an object of interest of scientists. The concept is understood as a continuum represented in the language by lexemes, phrases, sentences, and texts. The author finds it possible to consider the concept not only when analyzing texts written by different authors, but also when studying the text of one author. With this approach, the author’s artistic concept becomes the subject of research. It is noteworthy that the concept of “suicide” is one of the insufficiently studied concepts of the English language, but it is of great importance for English and American culture. The concept of “suicide” in the novel is shown from two sides: from the side of detective Billy Hodges and of his antagonist Brady Hartsfield. Using the AntConc program, the author analyzed the frequency of the means of expressing the artistic concept of “suicide” in the novel “End of watch”, as a result of which the most common lexemes were identified. The concept of “suicide” is lexicalized, since it has a systemic means of expression in the form of a word or a phrase fixed in dictionaries. The analysis allows the author to mace a conclusion about the variety of means of expressing the concept of “suicide” and its high significance in the work under study. S. King involves traditional images in the interpretation of this concept; but these images are transformed in an original way.
