Abstract

The paper is devoted to the study of the word mackintosh in the Russian-language works of Vladimir Nabokov. Quantitative observations are presented (Nabokov is the leader in the use of this word throughout the Russian-speaking corpus); an overview of the moments of the history of the mackintosh as a garment is made, historically variable associative components of the image of the mackintosh are considered - from a luxury item to a sign of intelligent poverty. The elements of the mackintosh visual image presented in Nabokov’s works (design, condition, typical colors) are considered as well. The main mechanisms of creating images using the word “mackintosh” are analyzed: metonymy and pun. In Nabokov’s poetic text, this word is also significant: it can work as a part of alliteration. The variety of translator’s solutions that arise in connection with the word mackintosh in various translations of Nabokov’s texts also gives the impression of Nabokov’s predilection for this word by reason of its play potential. The interaction of the mackintosh as an object, the image of the mackintosh and the word mackintosh in the life and texts of Vladimir Nabokov creates a peculiar pattern.
