Abstract

Continuing the responsible conversation opened by the article in the previous issue of the journal about the role of the intellectual stratum in national history, the author analyzes in detail such specific properties of the Russian reflecting public as contemplation, quietism, farcism, detachment, reasoning, renunciation, entailing disappointing self-destructive apostasy. The careless humanistic release of speculative ideas, life-unencumbered symbols, stimulating wandering through the snares of “moral idealism”, radically separated the zeal for the “higher” destinies of the intelligentsia from the service of the concerns of the “current” day of the government, the people.
