Abstract

In the article, we analyze phrases with the component “деньги” (money) that denote new concepts in the modern Russian economy using the method of oppositions. This method helps to classify the referred units and reveal the features of the evaluative perception of money in the Russian national consciousness. Based on various lexicographic sources and examples from the National Corpus of the Russian Language, the authors describe three groups of monetary nominations containing perceptual lexemes (archetypal, functional, experiential) and demonstrate the specifics of each of them. The analysis of the linguistic material showed that the archetypal oppositions with modern monetary terminology based on the mythology of ancient people reflect the understanding of money through the prism of the dyad “one’s own - someone else’s” and show, how a person treats money from a legal viewpoint. Functional oppositions demonstrate a different evaluative mechanism - the idea of activity is important for them, they show how the phenomenon under consideration manifests itself in work, in action. Experiential oppositions show what effect money has on a person. The authors conclude that the value meanings revealed in the metaphorical compatibility of language units that nominate money reflect their dual nature, the complex and contradictory attitude of our contemporaries towards them. Of particular interest is the fact that metaphorical evaluative phrases with a lexical component “деньги” (money) in the studied area begin to acquire terminological stability and repetition, which undoubtedly indicates the importance of reflecting this kind of oppositional relations in linguistic consciousness and comprehension.
