Abstract

Confessional issues are discussed at the highest levels of the power hierarchy. The author of the article analyzes the number of mentions of representatives of the most numerous confessions of Russia (Orthodox and Muslim) on the official website of the President of Russia. Search queries showed a very expected distribution of groups of believers, representatives of religions and confessions, according to the number of references: in the first place are the Orthodox and Muslims declared in the title of the article. However, according to the author, this fact cannot be explained by the mere numerical predominance of ethnic groups traditionally professing these religions. The rating of mentions of certain confessions, as well as some of its discrepancy with the real number of their representatives, is explained by the general specifics of Russian domestic and foreign policy in relation to religious and near-religious issues. In addition, the analysis of the site’s materials revealed the President’s increased interest in Sunni-Shiite issues. In general, according to the author of the article, the materials on the President’s official website reflect a fairly balanced, somewhat pragmatic position of the executive branch on the religious issue, which, in general, has not been a priority on the agenda for almost 20 years. Individual maximums of references to Orthodox Christians and Muslims are associated with real historical events, are situational in nature, they can in no way be called tendentious. For example, the largest number of references to Orthodox Christians fell on 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, which the author associates with the election of a new patriarch and with a punk prayer that caused a wide public response.
