Abstract

The article is aimed at English HEI terms and the ways of their interpretation (translation) into Russian. It is carried out with the help of the forwarded experiment for selecting translation equivalents and comparative English-Russian translation analysis. The research is based on the texts of qualitative scientific and methodological journals and official documents of higher education in Russia, Europe, and Asia. 90 terms of education sphere were taken from the texts above and applied to carry out the following experiment. The study employed various translations of English stimulus language units (metaterms) made by two focus-groups to verify the findings. The first group comprised students of Bashkir State University (with the Russian language as a native one) who study English as bachelors (Applied linguistics and practice and theory of translation) with intermediate and upper-intermediate English level. The second group included professional translators with advanced level of the English language knowledge. The respondents performed the English-Russian translation of 90 metaterms without reference to any manuals or on-line dictionaries. They encountered some difficulties that are proposed to be solved with the help of interpretation strategies, namely, semanticized, linguistic and cultural, and cognitive ones. The strategies contribute to the necessary and sufficient information accumulation and lead to comprehending the term meaning at different levels, thus helping the translator to cope with the challenging task of term translation and interpretation. Consequently, semantic and formal adequacy of translation is achieved.
