Abstract

The review article deals with the phenomenon of a modern polyethnic city; the relevance, theoretical and practical significance of such a new discipline as urbanology (formed in national science in the second half of the twentieth century) is substantiated. Linguistic urban studies intend to use the language of Ufa as a fragment of urban culture, the most important of the subsystems of the city’s semiotics. The urban centric communicative mode is proposed, it includes the following elements: 1) the Ufa city as a text; 2) “crowd-assisted citizen” having a “common memory”, a general idea of the landscape, the history of the city, its customs, folklore, 3) “the image” of the city, presented in the collective myth-making. Due to expanding of the list of linguistic urban objects, it is possible to perform multivariable study of the concept Ufa. The author of the article notes the data obtained during the study of the city over the past two decades. It could be affirmed that Ufa as a multicultural space is the unifying constant of one of the most important regions of Russia (the Urals), and being an object of linguistic urban studies, it expands the spheres of modern science, for example, the cooperation of two cultures (Russian and Bashkir) in the context of an urban text through an analysis of external advertising in order to identify the symbols of Bashkir culture and the Bashkir language, the results of an associative experiment with the toponym Ufa, etc.
