Abstract

The article presents the analysis of official opponents’ reviews for scientific degree theses and focuses on positive and negative evaluation. Despite the rationality and objectivity of scientific speech in general, evaluation is an integral part of it and can be represented at all language levels (lexical, morphological, syntactic) and expressed by a word, phrase, or whole sentence. Negative evaluation is a mandatory structural element of the review text, pointing out shortcomings of the thesis and opening up new prospects for work; positive evaluation affects the primary opinion of the audience and indicates the merits of the thesis - it helps to maintain ethical and psychological balance in scientific communication. Both positive and negative evaluation types are based on stereotypical forms adopted by the scientific community. In addition, when analyzing the reviews made by official opponents, special attention is paid to the category of intensity, which helps to focus on certain points within the thesis. There are different-level means of evaluation intensification: frequent use of lexical means, there are also word-formation, morphological, and syntactic means. Different intensificators, from the most neutral and explicit очень (very) , весьма (rather) to stronger ones from the point of view of emotionality, which intensify evaluative meaning, are analyzed in the article. Specific (unique) cases of personal evaluation intensification, based on metaphor, comparison, and antithesis are considered as the most interesting; they help author to express a view on the quality of thesis and its results more accurately.
