Abstract

The article is devoted to the history and architectural ensemble of the Leokhnovsky Spassky monastery, as well as to preliminary genealogical study of the personality of its founder St. Anthony Leokhnovsky. The author focuses on the history of the Foundation of the monastery, on the role that this monastery played in the historical and cultural development of the Russian province. He also considers the question of the role that this monastery played in the spiritual and moral care for the local nobility in the middle of the 19th century. The author also touches upon the issue of architectural development of the monastery ensemble and the role that was played in its development by outstanding Russian architect V. P. Stasov. The author pays attention to the history of the name of Leokhnovskaya Ivitskaya poustinia and, following the St. Petersburg genealogist and scholar of the local history Nikolay Petrovich Ivitsky, considers the hypothesis that the name may be associated with a family name of St. Anthony’s maternal kinship.
