Abstract

The article is devoted to the history and architecture of one of the most famous monasteries of the Vologda region, the Kamenny monastery on Kubensky Lake. Nowadays, the interest of public consciousness to the Orthodox origins of Russian culture is significantly rising. Modern development of the Russian state cannot be complete without the restoration of positive elements of our culture and spiritual life that were lost. Special attention should be paid to such aspects of spiritual culture as the cultural and historical role of Orthodox monasteries in the history of Russia. Currently, Russian historiography considers the history and socio-cultural role of Orthodox monasteries mainly in the context of the development of large and well-known monasteries, as well as urban monasteries. At the same time, the little-known history of remote monasteries and hermitages in the areas that underwent secularization in the eighteenth century remains understudied. Therefore, their role in the history of Russia was underestimated. The authors of the article raised the important problem of changing the socio-political and cultural role of the Orthodox monastery in development of the Russian state. The authors sought to show its role in the socio-political events of the history of Russia of the 15th century, its role in the formation of architectural ensembles monasteries of the Russian North on the example of the history of the ancient Kamenny monastery. These facts place this monastery on a list of interesting monuments of ancient Russian architecture, which contributed to the history of world architecture.
