Abstract

The author of the article considers the matter of semantic relationship of syncretic forms of the noun/adjective type. The primary syncretic word of archaic language did not represent a separate grammatical category. The leading role was assigned to the semantics of the word, in which the name of the object and its characteristics by some quality or property were reflected. Syncretic forms of modern language typologically correspond to syncretic forms of archaic language but possess inherent adjectival features that arose in the course of language development. The sequence of changes can be divided into three stages. Analysis of the semantics of modern syncretic forms allows drawing conclusions about the sequence of grammatical categories differentiation and the preservation of syncretic meaning in modern syncretic forms.
